Oregano: spice with healing properties

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is commonly known today as "pizza spice". The herb-aromatic fragrant herb is an indispensable part of the modern kitchen, although this plant has only been used for about 200 years for seasoning. As a remedy, however, oregano was already used by the ancient Greeks, which is why its name comes from the Greek language and translates as "jewelry of the mountains" means (Oros = Mountain, Gonos = jewelry, shine). So this herb was originally native to the Mediterranean region. Today, oregano has also spread in Asia, southern Europe, Austria and Switzerland, where it grows wild on poor meadows and dry, sunny lime and gravel soils.

Oregano: healthy and well-tried

In Germany, healthy oregano has been known as a medicinal plant since the Middle Ages. Since then, the plant known as "Dost" or "Wild Marjoram" can be found in our herb gardens. However, the German names refer only to the occurring here oregano variety, the spice and healing power of the southern occurring varieties is larger.

In the herbal pharmacy, the entire Oregnao plant can be used. The best harvest time of the herb is at the flowering time of the plant, while the leaves can be used as a herbal spice for food throughout the growing season.

Active ingredients and healing properties of oregano

Ingredients of oregano with medicinal effect are mainly the tannins and bitter substances as well as the essential oils. The latter include in particular:

  • thymol
  • carvacrol
  • cymene
  • borneol

The medicinal plant oregano is used especially in complaints of the entire digestive tract (stomach, intestine, liver, bile) and respiratory diseases use and has anti-inflammatory especially in the mouth and throat.

The essential oregano oil with its high content of phenols in aromatherapy is the strongest natural antibiotic.

Prepare oregano tea yourself

For healing oregano tea, pour 1 teaspoon of the dried herb with ¼ liter of boiling water and leave to infuse for 5 minutes.

  • For cough, oregano tea should be drunk in sweetened form several times a day.
  • For indigestion, the tea should be drawn for 10 minutes and drunk unsweetened after meals.
  • Gargling with oregano tea relieves cough, throat and toothache, and inflammation of the mouth and throat.

Oregano as a spice

The most intense taste is conveyed by the Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. Oregano has long been used in Mediterranean cuisine in tomato sauce, pizza spice, lettuce or steamed fish. But roast potatoes, grilled meats, scrambled eggs and chilli con carne also taste great when cooked with this appetizing spice.

Oregano should cook along for a long time, because the herbs develop their strongest taste when cooking.

Maintain and grow oregano

The oregano belonging to the labiates displays its first flowers in June. They are arranged in panicles and are usually of pink, rarely white color. The oregano is used as a "bee pasture" until late August, but it also attracts many species of butterflies. The oregano herbs themselves are 30-60 cm high and have woody shoots on the base, where glandular hairy, ovate to elliptical leaves grow.

Oregano is considered the "more robust brother" of marjoram and feels at home quickly in warm, sunny spots in the garden. Once planted, it spreads quickly through self-sowing and Wurzelausläufer and can survive the winter cold in our latitudes. Oregano is easy to maintain and should be watered sparingly. According to his homeland, he loves sunny, calcareous locations.
